When Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, took our flesh in the mystery of the Incarnation, He became flesh: True God and True Man. So what is the worth of a person? It is not primarily the sum of our actions. It is certainly not limited in any way to the status of our citizenship. Nor is it tied to the measure of our I.Q., the quantity of our material possessions, or our position in the community or the Church. Our lasting and irrevocable worth is grounded in the fact that we are a son or daughter of the heavenly Father. Our inestimable value is tied to the fact that Jesus Christ has united Himself in some fashion with each person. He has died for me and you. He has given our mortal nature, immortal value. Because of His Plan we are destined for eternity, and even now He has made it possible for us to live in His grace and life. Mankind has become new – newborn – in this mystery of Christmas. And while we adore the Christ-child, we must be ready to honor each person – all of whom share His image.

Yesterday's New York State primaries yielded some interesting results, not the least of which is that the major Republican nominations are now held by pro-lifers:

1.  Governor's Race

Carl Paladino, the pro-life "Tea Party" candidate, crushed the establishment GOP candidate, Rick Lazio.  Paladino will oppose pro-abortion and pro-same-sex "marriage" Andrew Cuomo in the general election.

Oddly, Mr. Lazio won the Conservative Party's primary and will appear on the ballot in November.  This could be a significant problem for the Conservative Party, which has to get 50,000 votes in the gubernatorial race in order to stay on the ballot.

2.  Attorney General's Race

Eric Schneiderman won the Democratic nomination for AG.  This is very bad.  He is a pro-abortion, pro-same-sex "marriage" zealot who likes to boast that he used to work as an abortion clinic escort.  He will oppose Dan Donovan, the Staten Island DA, who is pro-life.

3.  US Senate Races

In the race for the seat held by pro-abortion Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, the Republican nomination was won by Joe DioGuardi, an old pro-lifer who served in Congress many years ago. 

In the race for pro-abortion Sen. Charles Schumer's seat, the Republican nomination was won by Jay Townsend, a pro-lifer.

Pro-Life America and the media: "When will our media reflect America on abortion?"

Some object to the term pro-life on the grounds that it gives the anti-abortion movement an unfair advantage. Accordingly, a number of news organizations no longer use pro-life or pro-choice, the latest being National Public Radio. The thought here is that the word pro-life is fooling people.

Now, if this were 1973, that might be an argument. But isn't it just a wee condescending to suggest, after more than a generation of contentious moral and political debate, that the American people really haven't figured out what pro-life and pro-choice mean?

Americans have done so, moreover, without a great deal of help from the press. In news reporting, it's not unusual to encounter constructions such as this AP dispatch from the presidential campaign about Sarah Palin: "She has worshipped at a nondenominational Bible church since 2002, opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest and supports classroom discussions about creationism."

That's fair as far as it goes. Just once, however, wouldn't it be interesting to see a leading newspaper write something like, "Nancy Pelosi, who opposes any restrictions on abortion, even in cases where a pregnant minor is taken across state lines without a parent's permission or where the fetus is halfway out the mother"?

Pope Benedict XVI told a delegation of politicians in Rome for a meeting of the European People's Party that the Catholic Church's main public policy thrust is the protection of human life from atrocities like abortion, euthanasia and human cloning. He said he hoped pro-life principles would become the bedrock of law throughout Europe.

"As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, the principal focus of her interventions in the public arena is the protection and promotion of the dignity of the person," he said.

"[S]he is thereby consciously drawing particular attention to principles which are not negotiable," the pope added, referring to the church's pro-life stance.

The pontiff called on the elected officials to defend human life "in all its stages, from the first moment of conception until natural death."

Pro-life principles "are not truths of faith, even though they receive further light and confirmation from faith," the pontiff added. "[T]hey are inscribed in human nature itself and therefore they are common to all humanity."
