40 Days for Life Begins in Westchester!

This morning, Wednesday, September 26, saw the beginning of our first day of the 40 Days for Life vigil witness at the Planned Parenthood (White Plains Center) in Greenburgh, the first ever in Westchester County.

One early witness, Nora, is not in our photo, but here is (L to R) Jeanne and her two youngest girls; then Joy, Carolyn, Cindy and Theresa (photo by Judy) who prayed morning prayer, the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and held signs in peaceful witness to life. Here they smile and greet friendly passersby:

 We embark upon another massive sacrifice outside Planned Parenthood in Spring Valley.

REMINDER: 40 Days for Life kick-off rally this Saturday!

Easy to get to - right near the Greenburgh Police Department HQ

There will be a kickoff rally on Saturday, September 22 from 2:30pm to 4pm.  The location is the Department of Transportation triangle (grassy area) between the I-287 off ramp and Tarrytown Road.  From the Planned Parenthood at 175 Tarrytown Road, White Plains you walk east towards the Westchester County Center for about two blocks.  (If you get to the bowling alley, you've gone too far.)

Archbishop Chaput: "I certainly can’t vote for somebody who’s either pro-choice or pro-abortion."

The Archbishop of Philadelphia, who is a member of the Capuchin order (a Franciscan).

He recently gave an extensive interview.

We have excerpted what he had to say about politics, values, and voting.

Politics

We’re speaking on the night Barack Obama is delivering his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Let me ask flat-out: Do you believe a Catholic in good faith can vote for Obama?
I can only speak in terms of my own personal views. I certainly can’t vote for somebody who’s either pro-choice or pro-abortion.

I’m not a Republican and I’m not a Democrat. I’m registered as an independent, because I don’t think the church should be identified with one party or another. As an individual and voter I have deep personal concerns about any party that supports changing the definition of marriage, supports abortion in all circumstances, wants to restrict the traditional understanding of religious freedom. Those kinds of issues cause me a great deal of uneasiness.

What about the wing of the church that says a party that supports the Ryan budget also ought to cause concern?
Jesus tells us very clearly that if we don’t help the poor, we’re going to go to hell. Period. There’s just no doubt about it. That has to be a foundational concern of Catholics and of all Christians. But Jesus didn’t say the government has to take care of them, or that we have to pay taxes to take care of them. Those are prudential judgments. Anybody who would condemn someone because of their position on taxes is making a leap that I can’t make as a Catholic. ... You can’t say that somebody’s not Christian because they want to limit taxation. Again, I’m speaking only for myself, but I think that’s a legitimate position. It may not be the correct one, but it’s certainly a legitimate Catholic position; and to say that it’s somehow intrinsically evil like abortion doesn’t make any sense at all.

That said, do you find the Ryan budget troubling?
The Ryan budget isn’t the budget I would write. I think he’s trying to deal with the same issue in the government I’m dealing with here locally, which is spending more than we bring in. I admire the courage of anyone who’s actually trying to solve the problems rather than paper over them. I think a vigorous debate about the issues, rather than the personalities, is the way through this problem. It’s immoral for us to continue to spend money we don’t have. I think that those persons who don’t want to deal with the issue are, in some ways, doing wrong by putting it off for their own political protection or the protection of their party.

Religious freedom has become the signature issue for the bishops’conference. Was the ‘Fortnight for Freedom’ a success?
It was a success in the sense that it brought this issue to greater awareness in the lives of many Catholics. In terms of really changing either the church or the national situation concretely, we have to yet to see its effects. The history of the world demonstrates that if we aren’t always on guard about religious freedom, we’ll lose it. It happens everywhere, and it could happen in the United States.

Church officials in Europe, bishops and cardinals, have told me that they’re astonished there is an actual threat to religious freedom in the United States. They’ve always seen us as embodying religious freedom more clearly than any other government or country in the history of the world. It’s also surprising to me. I would never have thought, even ten years ago, that we would be dealing with it so quickly. What opened my eyes was my service to the United States as a member of the Commission on International Religious Freedom. I saw things in Western Europe that disturbed me in terms of limitations on religious freedom, mostly for non-Christian groups such as the Muslims. I thought that if Western Europe could do this, it could happen in the United States too.

Also tonight, Cardinal Timothy Dolan is delivering a benediction at the DNC, after having done the same thing for the Republicans. In 2008, you didn’t offer a benediction for the DNC when it met in Denver. Had you been invited, would you have accepted?
I was safe from making that decision because they didn’t invite me. It would have been very hard for me to have done it without saying things about abortion and the meaning of marriage. If they would be willing to let me be myself and say something about my convictions in my prayer, then I would have prayed. If they would have restricted my freedom about what I thought should be said, I wouldn’t have accepted.

Both U.S. Senators in Pennsylvania and the Governor are Catholic. How are your relationships with them?
I’m committed to on-going relationships with them because I’m the Catholic bishop here. For the first time in a long while, we have three or four men who could be executed under the death penalty law in the state of Pennsylvania. I’m communicating formally with the governor right now and the state legislature on this matter, because the church is opposed to capital punishment and I’m certainly opposed to it.

Are you optimistic?
I certainly am. We haven’t executed anyone in Pennsylvania for a long time, and there’s just no reason for anyone to be committed to doing that.

    I have been told more times than I can count that if I were truly against abortion I would have to be     pro-contraception.  “Contraception prevents unwanted pregnancies,” the argument goes, “so putting     women on reliable birth control would cut down on unwanted pregnancies and there would be fewer     abortions.”

    It’s an old argument, but always flung at me as if it were fresh and new and something I had never     considered before this present moment.  I think they expect me to stand there with my mouth     hanging open at the cleverness of this point of view.  This not being my first rodeo, I simply smile     and ask “What about the failure rate?”

    It’s a statistical anomaly, I’m told, if only people used contraceptives correctly there would virtually     no unplanned pregnancies.  Education and free access are all that separate us from an abortion free     world.

    “What about the failure rates?” I press them again, only to be told that those are just statistics.  The     number of those pregnancies is so small…..

    I’d like to introduce myself: I am the Failure Rate.  My husband and I have “defeated” almost every     form of birth control available.  Back in our pre-Catholic days, we did the “only sensible and     responsible thing ” and tried to prevent babies from coming before we wanted them to come.

Former Dem Congressman Bart Stupak: "HHS Mandate Violates My Obamacare Compromise" and further, is unconstitutional

A little late, isn't it? Stupak was the leading pro-life Democrat who bought into the Obama "compromise" and supported the Healthcare legislation (Obamacare).

Former Congressman Bart Stupak admits a compromise he made with Barack Obama to pass the Affordable Care Act is invalidated by HHS's controversial mandate for taxpayer-funded contraception, including abortion-inducing drugs.

An attendee (At the Democrats for Life of America panel discussion at the Democratic National Convention) stood up and asked Bart Stupak and a panel of pro-life if the HHS contraception mandate has put them in a difficult position. Stupak responded, “I am perplexed and disappointed that, having negotiated the Executive Order with the President, not only does the HHS mandate violate the Executive Order but it also violates statutory law.”

Conservatives cautioned that the Executive Order was cheap political cover that could just as easily be undone by the President.

It took him a few years, but apparently Stupak has come to that realization as well.

Each day, the convention will highlight politicians and Hollywood stars hostile to religious freedom and the pro-life cause. If in attendance, pro-life Democrats are to be seen, but not heard. The message is clear: If you are a pro-life Democrat, you are not welcome at this Democratic-establishment abortion-palooza. The party that spins diversity is signaling to pro-lifers that they have no business showing up in Charlotte, N.C.

The reality is that any gender gap that may exist is not because of abortion. In fact, in a Gallup poll this year, 46 percent of women identified themselves as pro-life while 44 percent identified as pro-choice. The pro-life numbers are even higher among married women.

However, the close numbers are largely recorded in an up and down question: Are you pro-life or pro-choice? When the discussion comes to taxpayer funding of abortion, leaving abortion survivors to die, partial-birth abortion, sex-selective abortion and abortion after the unborn child can feel pain, women even more frequently find these positions objectionable, abhorrent and even grotesque. Women don’t see late-term abortions and a government-subsidized abortion industry as their future.

40 Days for Life Campaign coming to White Plains for the first time

White Plains, NY – “The nation’s most innovative, peaceful pro-life prayer outreach is coming to White Plains,” said Gerald Yeung, who is coordinating the area’s 40 Days for Life campaign. “We are eager to join together with people of faith and conscience from cities from coast to coast – and beyond – to pray for an end to abortion.”

40 Days for Life begins September 26 and continues through November 4. “Abortion takes a tremendous toll in our city,” said Yeung, “but many people aren’t even aware of it. We will share the facts with as many people as possible during the 40-day campaign,” Yeung said.

The campaign will feature a peaceful 40-day prayer vigil in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood – White Plains Center at 175 Tarrytown Road. All prayer vigil participants are asked to sign a statement of peace, pledging to conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner at all times.

40 Days for Life is a peaceful, highly-focused, non-denominational, pro-life initiative that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and grassroots educational outreach. The 40-day time frame is drawn from examples throughout Biblical history.

“40 Days for Life has consistently generated proven life-saving results,” said Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life’s national campaign director. “During ten nationally coordinated campaigns, 440 communities have taken part.
