This is being used at Holy Name of Mary in Croton, NY for the next two weekends. Postcards will be signed, and sent to Senate Majority leader Joseph Bruno, urging him to prevent the Spitzer bill from reaching the floor of the Senate. Local State legislators will be contacted, too.
It will be read by the lector. It is very important and helpful for the priest-celebrant to then urge in his own words that people sign the postcards, that this is only the first step, and that speaking out on issues is not a "violation of the separation of Church and State."
In New York State we are faced with legislation introduced by Governor Spitzer that could coerce all physicians and hospitals in the State, including Catholic hospitals, to perform abortions and all employers to offer healthcare insurance that covers abortions regardless of their religious convictions or the dictates of their consciences. This would be a violation of religious freedom and civil rights. Parishioners will be at the rear of the church after Mass with postcards for you to sign to object to this law. Please stand up and be counted regarding this vital matter.
