The Women's Equality Day Reformed ceremony will start promptly at 12 Noon in White Plains on Friday, August 10, 2007, Michaelian Building, 148 Martine Avenue (at Court Street). This will be another great celebration in anticipation of the anniversary of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment. Keynote speaker will be Nora Kelly of the Cord Blood Registry. 2007 Honoree is nurse-midwife Gabrielle Long Wright, CNM.
August 26, 1920 saw the granting of voting rights to women. Eighty-seven years later we see women still challenged by feminist history new and old, good and bad. How far have women come in 87 years and at what price? To which voices and to what messages are women listening? What consequences to the lives of women, what remedies to their plights or what new ones have the involvement of women brought into the culture?
The day's ceremony will focus on the important role of women and the obligation women have to learn about and speak the truth on all issues, most especially those that effect women directly. The early suffragettes are excellent examples of women who heard the call and spoke out first for the disenfranchised slave, and then for expanded rights for themselves and their children. Their personal fortitude and tenacious and spirited calls for equality in the voting booth became key to an expansion of the roles of women as citizens. Of singular importance has always been the role of women helping women.
