Abortion Debate Gains Volume in Europe - AOL News
The abortion debate in Europe, once largely settled in favor of liberal access, is reopening as anti-abortion groups gain strength and activists from the USA and other countries join the fight.
The latest battleground is Portugal. Voters will decide Sunday whether to relax one of Europe's toughest anti-abortion laws by legalizing the procedure during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Abortion is illegal in Portugal except in cases of rape, birth defects and danger to the mother's health. It is punishable by imprisonment, though rarely prosecuted.
