Abortion rate drops in New York City

We received the following in an email from Chris Slattery of Expectant Mother Care (EMC).

Nearly 2800 Fewer Abortions in Abortion Capital Last Year.

According to the just released Summary of Vital Statistics for 2005 of the NYC Department of Health, abortions very happily decreased by 3% compared to 2004.

There were close to 89,000 babies killed last year, a staggering amount of death, but at least it is headed in the right direction!

Thanks belong to those who have been a part of the EMC team last year who helped us prevent close to 1,500 near certain abortions, a significant part ofthe decline, we believe.

Another Cost of Aggressive Population Control in China

The children of the Chinese One-child policy are finding new obstacles in their paths: no one wants to hire them. Incredible, but true. It seems that many of the only children have been so pampered by their parents, that employers do not find them suitable workers. Some have called these children, “Little Emperors,” because their parents dote on them so thoroughly. Evidently, this is not good preparation for working in the global economy!

Recently, China Daily reports, the Sinohydro Engineering Bureau No. 1 in the central province of Henan held a job fair for students majoring in hydro-electricity. But when Chen Fengxin expectantly handed over his resume, it was not murmurs of approval he heard but these questions: “Are you from a village? Do you have any brothers and sisters?” If he was from a city, and especially if he was an only child (as city children are more likely to be), the recruiter was not interested. Chen was stunned.

A female representative of the hydro scheme explained to a local paper: “Students from cities and only children cannot endure the hardships incurred in the process of geological exploration. Brain drain is rife,” she said, adding that parents of only children hope their offspring can stay close to them and not work too far away.

The HVCL is a 501(c)4 non-profit corporation.

As such, there are certain "rules of the road" we must abide by. The basic definition of a 501(c)4 is "an organization not organized for profit, but operating exclusively for the promotion of social welfare..."

However, an entity organized as a 501(c)4 is not prohibited from political acitivity, including candidate endorsement. Here is a one pager succinctly describing what our type of non-profit organization can and cannot do:

Note that the Wikipedia article lists the following very politically active organizations as 501(c) 4's. All of them are very active in the political sphere including endorsing candidates. As long as political action and candidate endorsement is not their main function, this is completely legitimate.

To compare a 501(c)4 with a Political Action Committee (PAC), here is the Wikipedia article on PAC's. Note that many 501(c)4's also are associated with PAC's (for example the National Rifle Association), but that is not a necessity to endorse candidates and positions. The main goal of a PAC is to raise money for political candidates, something which 501(c)4's are forbidden to do.

Westchester and our other counties in the State need brave, determined souls to gather signatures for Right to Life Party candidates for County Legislator, County Executive, and State Supreme Court positions in 2007.

Any registered voter can sign an independent petition for pro-life candidates in the county where they reside.

The Right to Life Party can run candidates on an independent line if we get enough signatures on a petition. In Westchester, countywide candidates (e.g., County Executive) need 1,500 valid signatures. Fifty percent more would make it 2,250 signatures to assure that candidates are on the November 2007 ballot.

Let your local Right to Life Party contact know by February 2007 if you wish to run, to encourage someone to run, or are moved by the tragedy of abortion in our State to collect signatures and be the voice of the voiceless.

It is important for all pro-life political workers who have been active within the last four years to meet together with the contact person in your area (see list above) to interview prospective candidates. The New York State Right to Life Committee has an excellent questionnaire. Call them at 518-434-1293 (www.nysrighttolife.org). Ask prospective candidates to fill it out. After prospective candidate leaves, talk together about his or her pro-life knowledge and qualifications. Decide if this is the candidate you wish to support.

Yonkers couple push for pro-adoption license plates

Charles Haynes, senior scholar at the First Amendment Center in Arlington, Va., and a moderate voice on religious liberty issues, said that once states create a public forum on license plates, they cannot pick and choose the messages they like.

"In the case of New York and New Jersey, when the state allows a variety of viewpoints, it should not be able to discriminate against a viewpoint that it doesn't like or finds offensive unless it has a very good reason for doing so, like obscenity," he said. "To me, it's clearly wrong for these states to reject the request for these plates. It's an easy case under the First Amendment."

Haynes said that federal courts have issued conflicting decisions on whether the plates represent public or government speech. The Supreme Court has not yet chosen to look at one of the cases.

"There are real implications here," Haynes said. "It's one thing if government says: 'These are our plates and we'll control what they say.' But it's disturbing if they say: 'Some messages we'll approve and some we'll reject.' "

The Rexes' foundation, meanwhile, has awarded $48,690 in grants since 2001, mostly to centers that care for pregnant women who plan to put their babies up for adoption. They get $4,000 a year in fees from the Connecticut plates. Their foundation's 3,500 members make donations. And Charles Rex holds concerts to raise money.
